Voodoo Experience boosts lineup
by Keith Spera, Music writer, The Times-Picayune
Friday September 05, 2008, 8:05 AM
Fans are excited as the Fall Out Boy takes the stage at the Voodoo Music Experience Sunday, October 28, 2007.The approach of Hurricane Gustav gave Voodoo Experience producer Stephen Rehage an unwelcome case of deja vu. In 2005, Rehage and his team scrambled to stage a free, scaled down Voodoo two months after Hurricane Katrina with Nine Inch Nails headlining. NIN is back this year -- and here comes another hurricane.
"I remembered all the struggles of 2005 and the options we might have to consider, but not moving forward this year never crossed my mind," Rehage said. "As I left New Orleans on the last flight out Sunday, I sent three e-mails: one each to Mayor Nagin and Lt. Gov. Landrieu commending them on their heroic leadership and thanking them for their service to the city. The third was to Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, which simply read, 'Are you f -- -- kidding me?' "

As of this week, the video of Theresa Andersson's one-woman-band "Na Na Na" has logged 712,262 views and counting on YouTube. From the look of it, the clip cost around $20 to produce. Alone in a corner of her Algiers Point kitchen, Andersson builds a full arrangement by working effects pedals and samplers with her bare feet, even as she sings and swaps out acoustic guitar and violin. It is an impressive bit of sonic choreography.

Fitz spits wit and politics in a new monologue at Voodoo Mystere
by David Cuthbert. Theater writer, The Times-Picayune
Friday September 05, 2008, 4:05 AM
Everyone's favorite rabid raconteur, playwright-provocateur Jim Fitzmorris, drove like a bat out of hell from his "evacuation fortress of solitude" to debut his latest outrage against public decency Saturday at the Voodoo Mystere. "Jim Fitzmorris Puts Marlin Gusman in a Hurt Locker" is the title and Fitzmorris says it's "about 45 minutes, with no intermission and involves pain and politics."

Indie sleeper 'Transsiberian' is one thrilling ride
by Mike Scott, Movie writer, The Times-Picayune
Friday September 05, 2008, 4:30 AM
A board an actual train, intriguing and mysterious strangers are the last people you want as companions. On the screen, however, they more often than not make for an interesting ride.
Agatha Christie proved that in "Murder on the Orient Express," with an assist from director Sidney Lumet and his 1974 big-screen version, a film that won Ingrid Bergman the last of her three Oscars. And writer-director Brad Anderson reinforces that lesson in "Transsiberian," a taut and engrossing indie thriller scheduled to pull into the station this week in New Orleans.

Editor's note: Due to Hurricane Gustav, many events scheduled for this weekend may have been canceled or postponed. Please be sure to call ahead.
Dear readers,
A friend of mine called me on Aug. 29 to ask how I was holding up in light of Hurricane Gustav swirling toward the Louisiana coastline. I made all the usual comments about how optimistic I was, that things were going well and I was sure Gustav would be, as one person said, a shoo-shoo.
And, as usual, she cut through the platitudes immediately (ever have a friend like that; they're golden). She said that she was sure my stomach was in knots (it was) and that what we New Orleanians suffer from now is the fear of the known. We know the worst that can happen (or at least we hope it's the worst).
WWII buffs can get a good look at notorious German Messerschmidtt
by Elizabeth Mullener, Staff writer, The Times-Picayune Friday September 05, 2008, 8:59 AM

Anyone who has ever wanted to get up close and personal with a Messerschmidtt will have a chance soon at the National World War II Museum.
The notorious fighter plane, backbone of the Luftwaffe, Germany's air force, has been high on the museum's wish list for years. There were 33,000 Messerschmidtts produced in Nazi Germany during the war years -- more than any other fighter plane in history.

"Spore," which will be released Sunday, let's you begin by choosing a planet to inhabit. Then you decide how you want to create its species -- starting with a single, simple-celled, microscopic organism.Lately, video games seem to suggest the Earth you and I live in -- bogged down by war, melting ice caps and idiots in general -- is in dire need of a do-over. In one of 2008's best games, "Civilization Revolution," you build Earth from scratch, evolving from warriors carrying spears all the way to astronauts.
Now here comes the new and buzzed Spore, which evolves us even further. In "Spore," which will be released Sunday, you begin by choosing a planet to inhabit. Then you decide how you want to create its species -- starting with a single, simple-celled, microscopic organism.

by Doug MacCash, Art writer, The Times-Picayune
Friday September 05, 2008, 8:19 AM

New Orleans' major art institutions emerged from Hurricane Gustav virtually unscathed, according to museum directors interviewed by phone on Tuesday, but re-opening dates remain uncertain.
Tree limbs fell in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden near the New Orleans Museum of Art, but the $300,000 Kenneth Snelson sculpture that collapsed during Hurricane Katrina remained standing, said museum director John Bullard.
