Ill-conceived drug war undermines our security
Neither presidential candidate has the courage to honestly address our biggest foreign policy problem: the global war on drugs. From opium in Afghanistan to cocaine in South America and methamphetamine in Mexico, our drug war keeps pulling us into expensive and futile conflicts.

Some ideas can't be supported
In recent letters to the editor, some people write what is pretty and sounds like the correct thing to say. They write that we should all support President-elect Obama. I wish they had expressed exactly what they meant when they say to "support" him.

Avoid taxes, aid charity
As we all know, with the election of Barack Obama those who net $250,000 or more per year will see their federal income taxes go up. Those who net less than that will see their federal income taxes go down (most Americans actually pay FICA only and not much in personal income taxes).

18-year-olds proud to vote
My 18-year-old son voted Tuesday for the first time. As he waited in line, some people standing directly behind him decided to voice their opinion on 18-year-olds voting: "Eighteen-year-olds shouldn't be here voting. They don't know what's going on. They should be in school."

It is unfortunate that The Times-Picayune continues its biased trend to blindly criticize FEMA without even a hint of balance or comprehension of the full picture. But you outdid yourself Nov. 4 by contradictory claims in two opinion pieces in the same issue.

Waking up to a new America
I awoke Wednesday morning with the feeling that the "I got mine" mentality might be coming to an end: the mentality of tax breaks for the very rich, of ignoring health care, of building bigger and better jails instead of bigger and better schools, of trampling on the Constitution.
