Ill-conceived drug war undermines our security
Neither presidential candidate has the courage to honestly address our biggest foreign policy problem: the global war on drugs. From opium in Afghanistan to cocaine in South America and methamphetamine in Mexico, our drug war keeps pulling us into expensive and futile conflicts.

    Some ideas can't be supported
In recent letters to the editor, some people write what is pretty and sounds like the correct thing to say. They write that we should all support President-elect Obama. I wish they had expressed exactly what they meant when they say to "support" him.

    Avoid taxes, aid charity
As we all know, with the election of Barack Obama those who net $250,000 or more per year will see their federal income taxes go up. Those who net less than that will see their federal income taxes go down (most Americans actually pay FICA only and not much in personal income taxes).

City dragging its feet on Youth Study Center
In 2007, Richard Winder, director of the Department of Human Services, asked the City Council for a $500,000 increase to his department's budget. Winder stated the increase would ensure the implementation of plans to fix the problems at the Youth Study Center.

    18-year-olds proud to vote
My 18-year-old son voted Tuesday for the first time. As he waited in line, some people standing directly behind him decided to voice their opinion on 18-year-olds voting: "Eighteen-year-olds shouldn't be here voting. They don't know what's going on. They should be in school."

    Eastern N.O. still waiting
I am a resident of eastern New Orleans. While driving to a doctor's appointment in West Jefferson Parish, I marveled at all of the businesses I saw along Manhattan Boulevard and Lapalco Boulevard. Why can't New Orleans East experience this type of commercial development?

    No argument
I like it when I'm asked about the recent election, because I get to share a brief story.

    Support our new commander
I am amazed at the number of people who can foretell the future now that the election is over. Some see nothing but blue skies and sunny days, while others see gloom and doom. Would one of these fortunetellers please contact me prior to this weekend and help me pick the teams to bet on?

Opinions ignore real progress made by FEMA
It is unfortunate that The Times-Picayune continues its biased trend to blindly criticize FEMA without even a hint of balance or comprehension of the full picture. But you outdid yourself Nov. 4 by contradictory claims in two opinion pieces in the same issue.

Waking up to a new America
I awoke Wednesday morning with the feeling that the "I got mine" mentality might be coming to an end: the mentality of tax breaks for the very rich, of ignoring health care, of building bigger and better jails instead of bigger and better schools, of trampling on the Constitution.
